The mountaineer’s family member said that Santiago had already been treated, and the wounds were caused by an avalanche that had fallen on him.
“Protect yourself. Remember, being alive is much more important than achievements,” a netizen said.
“Not worth the hype. Aanhin mo naman yang ganyang achievement kung magiging kwento ka naman. Di rin naman masabi na hero, kasi may naisave ba? May nagawa ba for change? Wala umakyat lang. Sinayang ang precious life,” another netizen remarked.
Journalist Emil Sumangil has already confirmed Santiago’s sad fate.
“The family respectfully requests privacy as we grieve and process these events. Your understanding, support, and prayers are deeply appreciated,” he stated.
It’s still unknown if Santiago’s body will be recovered, as it was already common that mountaineers who passed away on Mount Everest would be left behind due to its high cost.
